Bio

Hank Linhart is a media artist living and working in Brooklyn.

His early work explored abstraction and metaphor with specialized video tools during
Artist Residencies at The Experimental Television Center in Binghamton and Owego, NY.

He is recipient of a 1985 CAPS (Creative Artists in Public Service Award).

Meanwhile he was a founding member and coordinator of the public access cable channel
in Ithaca, NY.

Upon moving to Brooklyn in the early 1980’s he continued to produce and exhibit videos
and he curated several shows of media works in local galleries.

He co-curated the Video Poetry Show at St.Mark’s Church. Funded by NYSCA.

He became involved with the Williamsburg community and a media collective
fighting environmental degradation and gentrification.
Videos were presented at City Hall, NY State Assembly, and the US District Attorney’s office.
He was a co-founder of the Williamsburg Cartography Club.

In 2004 he co produced the experimental documentary Fearful Visitation about
the 1904 ship disaster in NY harbor, which premiered at the NY Historical Society
and was aired on several PBS stations. The project received support from the German Consulate in NYC.

He studied with Steina and Woody Vasulka and Tony Conrad at the Center for Media Studies,
SUNY Buffalo, and formerly was a professor of media arts at NYU, School of Visual Arts,
and Pratt Institute. For his last 7 years at Pratt, he was chairperson of the Media Arts Department.

The Blissville project began in 1989, was suspended in 1996, resumed in 2012, and completed in 2017.
The project began with a NYFA Fellowship, and was later awarded a  NYSCA Production grant.
Finishing Funds were provided by  Brooklyn Arts Council – Community Arts Fund; NYSCA through
the Southern Finger Lakes Arts Council; and the Puffin Foundation. Distribution and Exhibition
funding has been provided a NYSCA Media Arts Assistance Award (MAAF) Award through Wave Farm.
